Energy Saving Recommendations for Retail Stores

Building

· Maintain automatic doors in good working order.
· Keep receiving doors closed when not in use.
· Keep emergency exits closed.

HVAC

· Keep store areas no cooler than 74 degrees during the summer.
· Keep stores no warmer than 70 degrees in winter.
· Promptly report temperature/humidity problems to maintenance hotline.
· Seal off areas under construction during remodeling or expansions.

Lighting (safety and hours of operation need to be considered)

· Turn off ½ of sales area ceiling lights at night.
· Turn off case lights at night.
· Turn off cooler/freezer lights when unoccupied.
· Turn off office/restroom lights when unoccupied.
· Check parking lot/sign lights for correct operation.
· Turn off department lights when closed.

Refrigeration

· Keep product below mfg. load line recommendations.
· Keep product from blocking case discharge and return grilles.
· Clean cases on a regular basis.
· Keep cooler/freezer doors closed.
· Use plastic strip doors on frequently opened cooler/freezers.
· Keep cartons of product in refrigeration. Do not stage in backroom or store aisles longer than 15 minutes.

Equipment

· Turn off equipment when not being used (except computers).
· Keep warm-up periods on ovens and fryers to a minimum.
· Turn off cooking hood fans/lights when not in use.
· Reduce operation of high-energy equipment (compactors, balers, pan washers) between the hours of 11 AM and 5 PM.
